AMA is collaborating with IDEA labs to support health IT innovation and encourage the next generation of healthcare technology entrepreneurs.
The American Medical Association has recently announced on its official website that it has partnered with IDEA labs to support health IT innovation and other medical technology developments from student entrepreneurs.
IDEA labs is a biotechnology incubator that is run by students at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Washington University in St. Louis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University of Minnesota.
IDEA labs aim to encourage medical entrepreneurship in students, establish a culture of innovation, and create new medical devices and software applications that solve clinical needs. The student-run group also brings together students, faculty, staff, and local entrepreneurs from across several disciplines to develop health IT innovation.
“IDEA Labs relies on collaborations with healthcare providers to create impactful new technologies,” said Stephen W. Linderman, MD, PhD candidate at Washington University in St. Louis, IDEA Labs President. “We look forward to collaborating with the AMA to spread the IDEA Labs model to more institutions and clinicians. By bringing together top universities across the country, connecting budding companies with the talent, mentors, and investors needed to thrive, this new collaboration will accelerate medical technology development and entrepreneurial education.”

The collaboration is part of AMA’s dedication to bolster health IT innovation and encourage new partnerships between physicians and developers. The organization intends to help innovators turn their healthcare technology ideas into real solutions for patient care.
“Innovation is a key driver in making the health system work better for everyone,” said James L. Madara, MD, AMA CEO and Executive Vice President. “The AMA looks forward to working together with IDEA Labs to help young entrepreneurs identify and understand key challenges in modern medicine and inspire innovation that will deliver meaningful solutions for patients and physicians.”
AMA also expects the partnership with IDEA labs to foster communication between inventors and physicians. Healthcare providers are encouraged to reach out to IDEA labs and other healthcare technology entrepreneurs to share their experience with medical technologies in real healthcare settings.
Additionally, AMA has recently expanded its influence in the health IT innovation ecosystem with several other collaborations.
In February 2015, AMA partnered with MATTER, a Chicago-based healthcare technology incubator, to create a studio that draws together physicians, entrepreneurs, and developers to create medical products and services.
Earlier this year, AMA also invested nearly $15 million in a health IT company in San Francisco. Health 2047 aims to improve patient outcomes and healthcare provider workflows through medical technologies and services. The company uses AMA’s extensive network of physician partnerships to create products with feedback from healthcare providers.
