Sue Schade, chief information officer at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, has been named the CHIME-HIMSS 2014 John E. Gall, Jr. CIO of the Year.
Schade is a 30-year health information technology veteran and a CEO for the past 15 years, serving at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for a dozen years before joining U-M to oversee implementation of a new electronic health records system from Epic. The EHR is at Stage 6 of the HIMSS Analytics scale for functionality.
A CHIME member since 2000, Schade has served on the board of trustees and education foundation board, and presently is a member of the policy steering committee. She also is a HIMSS Fellow and serves on the Michigan Hospital Association’s IT strategy committee and the board of Great Lakes Health Connect, a health information exchange.
CHIME and HIMSS annually select a recipient that has made significant contributions to their organization and have demonstrated leadership through effective use of technology. The award is named after John E. Gall, Jr., who pioneered electronic health records at El Camino Hospital in California in the 1960s.
