Due to the growth of the aging population, the demand for physicians has intensified and now, communities around the country are already experiencing doctor shortages. The Association of American Medical College estimates, the U.S. will be facing a shortage of more than 130,000 doctors by 2025. To help ward off this dire prediction, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center (AHMC) has established a Graduate Medical Education Residency Training Program and is also a major participating site for a General Surgery Residency Training Program, also sponsored by Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).
Recognizing residency programs are in short supply nationwide as well, AHMC began planning for the Internal Medicine Residency Program over two years ago when Dr. Hamid Feiz joined the staff and was appointed Program Director. Following the launch of the Internal Medicine Training Program last July, with 12 inaugural residents, the hospital joined the ranks of community hospitals turned teaching hospitals in order to help meet the demand for primary care physicians.
The program’s interns, hailed as “healthcare’s future problems solvers,” are supported by the hospital’s staff and inter-professional healthcare teams as they participate in rotations and specialty-specific clinics. They’re also involved in research initiatives spearheaded by the hospital’s new Graduate Medical Education Research Institution, established to facilitate publication and presentation opportunities for residents as well as faculty members.
More good healthcare news isAHMC has received institutional accreditation as a training facility, which will enable the hospital to establish additional residencies in multiple specialties beyond internal medicine and the general surgery training program affiliated with Kendall Regional Medical Center under the direction of Dr. David Grossman – an active member of the AHMC staff since 2007.
