Salaries for health IT professionals continue to rise as employers work to meet meaningful use and transition to ICD-10 code sets, among other federal requirements, according to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) compensation survey.
Under the 2009 federal economic stimulus package, healthcare providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health record systems can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.
The compliance date for healthcare organizations to transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets is Oct. 1, 2014. The switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets means that healthcare providers and insurers will have to change out about 14,000 codes for about 69,000 codes.
The survey includes responses from 1,160 HIMSS members. Data for the survey were collected between August and October. Overall, the average salary for a health IT professional is $113,269, while the median salary is $95,000. According to the survey, the average salary by professional level is:

Since 2010, health IT salaries for men have increased by 5%, while women’s health IT salaries have increased by less than 1%, according to the survey.
