BOSTON – The Massachusetts Public Health Council has approved the application for a change of ownership making Jordan Hospital a member of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center family, bringing enhanced clinical services and additional primary care physicians to the South Shore and Cape Cod.
Under the agreement, which will become effective Jan. 1, 2014, BIDMC will be the sole corporate member of Jordan Health Systems and Jordan Hospital. This structure is the same relationship that BIDMC has with its Milton and Needham hospitals.
Jordan Hospital will be renamed Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth to reflect the greater integration.
This alliance will be a significant benefit to patients in the Jordan Hospital service area, providing access to world-class academic medical care in Plymouth and surrounding communities. Independent market research shows that patients and potential patients already place a high value on both Jordan Hospital and BIDMC, and feel that both can provide high quality health care.

“Jordan Hospital’s primary mission is to improve the health and well-being of our patients and community,” says Jordan Hospital President & CEO Peter Holden. “This alliance is the best of both worlds for our patients. BIDMC – a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School – and Jordan Hospital, working together, will enhance and expand programs in the community.”
“We are pleased to welcome this excellent community hospital into our growing family,” said Kevin Tabb, MD, President and CEO of BIDMC. “Our formal alliance with Jordan Hospital strengthens our community network, and is fundamental to our long-standing philosophy to provide care in the right place at the right time.”
Guy Spinelli, MD, Chair of the Board of Atrius Health, a non-profit alliance of independent medical groups which selected BIDMC as its preferred tertiary hospital nearly four years ago, said the new relationship will expand hospital choices for patients of the Atrius Health groups south of Boston.
“BIDMC and Atrius Health have worked closely together for several years on clinical programs and coordination of care for patients who need more complex hospital services,” said Spinelli. “BIDMC and Atrius Health are each considered leaders in providing high quality care in an efficient, coordinated way and in developing innovative models under new global payment systems. We look forward to bringing our team approach to the communities served by Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth.”
“Jordan Hospital has provided residents in this region with high quality medical treatment for more than 110 years,” said state Senate President Therese Murray. “I am confident this alliance of two excellent health care organizations will mean that my constituents, neighbors and family will continue to receive the same high quality care in the community that we have grown accustomed to over the last century.”
Under the agreement, Jordan Hospital will retain its own local management, local board governance and independent medical staff, and will remain separately licensed. BIDMC will have three representatives on Jordan Hospital’s Board; Jordan Hospital will also have representation on the BIDMC Board of Directors. Jordan Hospital’s Board will continue to oversee the hospital’s strategic planning and day-to-day operations. BIDMC and Jordan Hospital will work together on strategic, financial and operational plans, and BIDMC will make significant capital investments to help expand Jordan Hospital’s primary care physician network and specialty clinical capabilities.
“BIDMC is committed to providing additional clinical resources, including bringing additional primary care physicians to the communities served by BID-Plymouth, being a resource for the development of enhanced local clinical programs, and adding more types of medical specialists to support new programs and services,” said Stanley Lewis, MD, BIDMC’s Senior Vice President for Network Integration.
“Integrating our existing services with the resources of BIDMC, our hospital will become stronger clinically and more secure financially,” said Mark DeMatteo, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine and Chair of the Medical Staff at Jordan Hospital.
