In 2011, Temple-based Scott & White Healthcare was struggling to find experienced nurses to keep up with the growth in patients and facilities.
Last year, it found the solution: stop relying on temporary nurses, and start training and investing in new graduates to fill permanent positions. Using money saved from the administrative costs to manage the temporary contracts, Scott & White was able to bring on nurse interns and recent graduates during the summer, in order to train them with residents and fellows, Health Leaders Media reports. Keith Minnis, vice president of human resources, said the approach has saved the organization millions of dollars.
Minnis said that one of the key reasons for changing the staffing strategy was to improve hiring from a quality and regulatory standpoint. Scott & White used a managed-service program to create a standard hiring practice, as well as drive down price points and maintain a higher level of quality with full-time employees.
Scott & White is on track to merge with Dallas-based Baylor Health Care System later this year.
