Nationwide Children’s Hospital is the first central Ohio hospital to join a statewide health-information exchange.
That means pediatricians and other clinicians that work with the hospital — particularly those in rural areas and Appalachia — will soon have access to real-time electronic information, rather than obtaining that medical information through other means, such as fax machines.
Supporters of the partnership say joining the statewide exchange makes the transfer of health information speedier and less prone to error.
Nationwide Children’s declined to say how much it is paying to join the exchange, which is called CliniSync and is administered by the Ohio Health Information Partnership, a Hilliard-based nonprofit.

The partnership said 89 hospitals are now under contract with the health-information exchange, including children’s hospitals in Dayton, Cleveland and Toledo. Thirty-seven of those hospitals are now live on the network, according to a news release.
A Nationwide Children’s spokeswoman said the hospital didn’t join the statewide exchange sooner in part because last year’s opening of a 293-bed inpatient hospital took precedence.
