1. What do you think of the federal and state governments’ preparation for health care reform so far?
I am pleased that more of us are acknowledging we need substantial reform and that politicians are now talking more openly about the unsustainability of Medicare/Medicaid. As expected, timelines keep getting pushed back as what sounds good is always more complicated when we really get started. I am not confident current legislative reforms will provide the expected outcome yet they have provided needed heat on the system.

2. More payers and providers are collaborating. How do you think this will affect the industry?
In general, this is a positive step and I am hoping it will build trust between the two. The bottom line is that costs need to go down and efficiencies need to be gained. I haven’t seen any real substantive action there yet.
3 What are you thoughts on Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs)?
ACO’s are an effective way to organize providers and align incentives. It remains to be seen whether they will be effective at lowering overall costs.
4. What healthcare innovation would you like to see as health care reform becomes a reality?
Team-based, relationship-centered care
5. How do you think consumers should prepare themselves for health care reform?
Consumers should learn more about how they promote and preserve their own health. They should also become more informed about what treatments/tests/procedures truly provide value.
6. There is a lot of buzz on social media in other industries, What is your view of social media and its adoption in the healthcare industry?
Social media offers some nice marketing and creative patient engagement opportunities. It can be a vehicle to improve access to information and services. We still have a lot to learn about how to best use this powerful tool.
7. Healthcare exchanges are going to drive significant consumer centricity in healthcare, what role do you see technology playing in this transformation?
I think social technologies that promote connectivity/relationships, learning, and behavior change show the most promise given the challenge we have to improve efficiency and outcomes.
8. The amount of data collected seems to be exponentially increasing year over year, what do you see as the future of analytics in health care?
Health claims data and analytics are insufficient and promote a post-acute care model. Social and demographic predictive analytics have the power to move us to a “pre-acute” care model which will provide more value for all of us.
9. What are the top challenges you are facing in 2013?
Shifting the mindset of patients, providers, and the public in an environment that feels overwhelming.
10. Any closing thoughts you would like to share with our subscribers?
This is a great time to be in this industry if we all take on the challenge.
