Eighty-four percent of hospitals in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut currently offer a wellness program, but only one in five currently has or is committed to having an accountable care organization within the next five years, according to a survey from Cammack LaRhette.
Employee wellness initiatives are a natural fit for many hospitals that are defining their accountable care and population health management strategies. This 2012 tri-state survey — based on responses from 45 hospitals in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut — has identified some employee wellness trends in hospitals.
Here are some other takeaways from the survey:
• Of the hospitals offering a wellness program, only 35 percent rely on wellness programs from an insurance carrier.

• Fifty-eight percent of hospitals have an internal wellness coordinator, and 68 percent have wellness committees.
• Eighty-one percent of respondents have executive level support for their wellness programs.
• Most hospitals responded that they were in the early stage of ACO or patient-centered medical home plans, and half said they were uncertain about exactly how they will proceed
