Executive say Cigna is the easiest insurer to work with
Hospitals enjoy working with Cigna, but have less friendly feelings toward WellPoint and Coventry, according to a new survey of hospital executives.
For its sixth annual National Payer Survey, ReviveHealth—a communications company that works with hospitals—surveyed 403 hospital CEOs, CFOs, and payer relations executives from February 2012 to June 2012. The survey included general questions about payer relations and specific questions about seven major U.S. insurance companies.
According to surveyed hospital executives, their overall favorability ratings are:
- 71% for Cigna;
- 60% for Aetna;
- 57% for an independent Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plan;
- 46% for Humana;
- 44% for United Healthcare;
- 35% for Coventry; and
- 27% for WellPoint/Anthem.
The survey also asked executives to rate their experiences with specific insurers from one to seven, with seven being the worst. The average score for:
- Cigna was 3.2;
- Aetna was 3.5;
- Coventry was 4;
- An independent BCBS plan was 4;
- Humana was 4.1;
- United was 4.5; and
- WellPoint/Anthem was 4.7.

Meanwhile, executives said that independent BCBS plans tend to have the worst payment rates, while Aetna has the best rates. However, BCBS plans do the best job of making paying hospital claims promptly, according to the executives (Nussbaum, Bloomberg Businessweek, 8/15; ReviveHealth release, 8/14; ReviveHealth report, 8/14).
