The EHR-giant will send IT leaders to the San Diego health system to work with IT staff and clinicians on new strategies focused on bolstering population health.
San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare announced it’s expanded its relationship with Cerner, to leverage additional tools and services to bolster care delivery and improve population health across the regional health system.
The new agreement will include the addition of Cerner associates to the Sharp team in San Diego, working with IT staff and clinicians to drive new strategy and improved care outcomes by leveraging Cerner’s population health tools.
The aim is to inform treatment decisions and care, while improving patient experience and allowing Sharp to remain up-to-date with the latest health IT tools from Cerner, including Cerner’s big data and analytics pop health management platform, HealtheIntent.

Sharp’s Community Medical Group will work with Cerner to improve the health of community members with HealtheIntent, to analyze medical data and support clinicians with actionable insights both at the healthcare setting and at home.
The health system will also use Cerner’s data warehouse solution HealtheEDW and community care management solution HealtheCare, which helps prioritize and assign patients to care managers. The population health management plan is designed to support health systems as they shift into value-based care.
Sharp will also extend Cerner’s electronic health record and revenue cycle tools to its 200 primary care providers and specialist. Officials said the platform will bring a single view of the patient record to clinicians, connecting clinical and financial information across the health system.
In addition, Cerner is designing solutions and services for Sharp to assist with their billing process.
“Cerner and Sharp look to further align to support improved quality of care, patient safety, continued growth and expanded reach throughout the San Diego community to help support the well-being of the people it serves,” Dan Gross, Executive Vice President of Hospital Operations for Sharp HealthCare, said in a statement.
“This next phase in our collaboration will bring our organizations closer to help deliver a high-quality and patient-centered care experience to the people of the San Diego area,” Joanne Burns, Cerner’s Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, said in a statement. “Sharp has taken another important step in connecting patient information across its health system and improving care delivery as it continues to grow and touch the lives of more individuals in their community.”
Sharp has partnered with Cerner on numerous projects since 2007, when it chose Cerner as its IT partner to implement clinical-information eSolutions throughout its health system.
