- HIMSS18 will include patient engagement sessions centered on the patient experience and using patient engagement in value-based care models.
- Hosted in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic, the Patient Engagement and Experience Summit will include seminars and case studies in emerging patient engagement trends.
As the healthcare industry continues to find ways to succeed in emerging value-based care models, patient engagement has taken a primary role. A better patient experience and improved outcomes through patient engagement are key trends at this year’s HIMSS 2018 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Just as last year’s HIMSS conference centered on the technologies that can drive better patient activation, access to care, and connected health, this year’s show will highlight the tools that support a better patient experience.
New this year is a focus on patient engagement and its role in supporting value-based care models. Using health IT in concert with interpersonal strategies, healthcare professionals are seeking to understand how an activated patient can bring value to the healthcare encounter.
Also new this year is HIMSS’ Patient Engagement and Experience Summit, which will bring together all of these themes in a one-day event on March 5. C-suite executives, nurses, chief nursing officers, physicians, and chief medical officers can all benefit from the multi-faceted seminars held all day.

While the summit will cover each of the primary patient engagement trends emerging at HIMSS 18, the rest of the event will also include numerous discussions about the role of patient engagement in alternative payment models and patient data use. Surrounding each of those ideas is the notion that a positive patient experience is fundamental to all healthcare encounters.
The patient engagement and experience summit
Hosted in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic, the Patient Engagement and Experience Summit will include seminars and case studies in emerging patient engagement trends. Hospital and clinical leaders will benefit from talks about a person-first health system, connected health, chronic disease management, and patient retention.
The event, which will be held in the Wynn Las Vegas from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will highlight each of those issues as a part of healthcare’s overarching goal of creating more value at a lower cost.
Patient engagement in alternative payment models
Also aligning with the theme of value in patient engagement strategies, attendees can visit the opening keynote, “Patient Engagement: What Should it Look Like in an APM Universe?” The talk features Greg Johnson, Chief Clinical Integration Officer at Parkland Health, and will answer questions about the patients with whom clinicians must engage for APM success.
Bright and early on Tuesday, March 6, the show will feature a talk from Erin Hatzikostas, CEO and President of PayFlex. This event will center on patient financial responsibility, an important part of healthcare as patients begin to assume more of their healthcare bills.
With the rise of high-deductible health plans, organizations must determine how to engage their patients in prompt bill pay. Additionally, organizations must create services that will attract patients who are putting their own dollars on the line for their health.
Using data to support patient engagement
Healthcare professionals will also be exploring the use of data in patient engagement efforts. As providers risk stratify their patients based on their engagement needs, organizations need a better handle on health data.
Monday, March 5, will include a discussion of data sources and how they can be integrated into clinical care. A panel the following morning will feature Ben Moscovitch from Pew Charitable Trusts and John Halamka from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center discussing patient matching. Patient matching is essential for effective use of patient data but currently leaves something to be desired in healthcare.
Creating positive patient experiences
Underscoring each of these themes is the idea of a positive patient experience. Numerous panels on the topic will be held throughout the HIMSS18 show.
The Patient Engagement and Experience Summit will touch heavily on this topic. On March 6 at 11:30 a.m., attendees to visit a panel on patient empowerment, a different discussion about patient entertainment at the bedside, or a session about using health IT to create the next generation of positive patient experiences.
The seminars held during this year’s HIMSS Conference underscore the evolving nature of patient engagement in healthcare. What was once centered on leveraging the patient portal and creating patient data access has now embraced a more outcomes-based nature. Patient engagement is now a part of value-based care strategies, and a tool for delivering quality outcomes at a lower cost.
