Republicans putting a lot of effort to repeal and replace the ACA (Affordable Care Act); and due to this political situation, all eyes are on the healthcare reform legislation only. But healthcare leaders suggest that providers shouldn’t lose their sight of the Triple Aim.
Healthcare leaders suggest providers stay focused on Triple Aim
A group of six healthcare leaders wrote in a blog post for NEJM Catalyst that the providers should stay focused on Triple Aim and shouldn’t lose sight on providing better quality at lower costs. They said regardless of the fact whether the Republicans would succeed in repealing and replacing the ACA; the providers should keep striving for better quality at a lower cost, that too, delivered with greater efficiency.
‘Bill or no bill, we still need to move forward and continue our focus on improving health and healthcare for our patients and our communities while reducing costs’, the healthcare leaders wrote. ‘Now is the time to double down on our work’.
Critical steps for 3 elements of Triple Aim
The six healthcare leaders outlined critical steps for the three elements of Triple Aim:
1. Population health:

The providers should preserve and ensure that patients should have access to preventative care and work. Along with this, the payers should offer more affordable care. Further, they should develop community partnerships so that the initiatives have a significant impact.
2. Improved patient care:
Providers should engage with patients so as to ensure that care meets their personalized needs and is also aligned with their values. Further, they should share ways in order to improve care between providers and even put the focus on care coordination.
3. Lower costs:
The providers should focus on high-value care and work towards the elimination of waste. They should engage with payers on ways so as to keep premiums from rising.
The writers said that the Triple Aim is just a starting point, and providers need to build from there.
Quadruple Aim
With the policy debate around the ACA, some of the providers have even pushed for ‘Quadruple Aim’ in order to improve quality, which included a fourth goal based on improving caregivers’ experiences.
Further, providers who want to improve patient and family involvement in order to achieve their goals of Triple Aim are recruiting patient advisors and also emphasizing a ‘culture of engagement’ in their organizations.
