A Cigna unit laid off 60 employees after exiting two Illinois Medicaid managed care programs this year, a Cigna spokesperson told Becker’s Hospital Review.
The unit, Cigna-HealthSpring, did not rebid for a new contract to manage Medicaid coverage in the state. Illinois Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner overhauled the state’s managed care program Jan. 1 to expand it and reduce the number of participating insurers.
Nationwide, Cigna-HealthSpring cut 200 positions affiliated with its Illinois Medicaid business. However, the majority of employees found jobs within the company or at other organizations, Doug Bennett Jr., business communications manager at Cigna, said.
