“The better medical science becomes, the worse the patients become,” seems to be coming true everyday in the world we live in.
A report published yesterday has stated that in the United States of America, one in six children are obese. It’s worse among the adults, out of whom one in every three is obese.
The report was published by America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. But is that all?
No, the report also presents one more worrying fact. The state to be considered one of the best in the United States, West Virginia, has the highest obesity rate (37.7 per cent) followed by Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas.
The report also says that such high levels of obesity mean that the country spends $150 billion on healthcare only to treat obesity and diseases related to it. Obesity has taken a toll on the litany of the country as well. While the State spent an extra $1billion on healthcare of obese soldiers and their families, nearly 70 per cent of the young population of America are unfit to join the military because they are obese.
“One in four young adults who try to join the military are ineligible due to fitness and weight concerns,” the report reads.
But the trends that the report has shown are some hope of good news. When compared with the last years, the obesity rates are coming down in a number of states or, at worst, at least stabilizing. But experts have warned that it won’t take much time to reverse the trends in case physical activities are not heavily promoted throughout the country.
If you want to know whether you are obese or not, as per the standards of the study, you can find out on your own as well. If your BMI ranges from 25 to 29, you are overweight. Anything above that is obese.
