While most of Joe Biden’s proposed cabinet nominees have been receiving an unenthusiastic response from progressives (or, in the case of Rahm Emanuel, loud boos), the newest named nominee, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for the Health and Human Services post, has many progressives nodding along and looking at each other as if to say, “OK, not bad, not bad.”
As John and Francesca discuss in this clip from The Damage Report, Bacerra has not only been a strong supporter of Medicare for All during his entire political career, but he’s also fought aggressively for reproductive rights, opposed right-wing “crisis pregnancy centers” that lie and otherwise mislead pregnant women, and opposed mergers of huge health insurance conglomerates in California. John argues that while Becerra will be obligated to toe the administration line on issues like Medicare for All, he will at least not put up excessive roadblocks if a groundswell of support for M4A rises and forces the administration to address it.
Francesca points out one downside to Bacerra’s appointment is that he won’t be able to spearhead an effort in California to pass a statewide single payer bill, but overall she’s still supportive of the HHS nod and hopeful Becerra will get Senate approval and continue the good work he’s done in California on a national level.
