UnitedHealth Group Inc. said Thursday it’s planning a big expansion of its service area in what the insurance giant called its “largest footprint expansion in five years.”
The Star Tribune has a report on the announcement by Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth (NYSE: UNH), which comes as the health insurance industry is preparing for the annual launch of open enrollment in coverage plans later this month.
UnitedHealth’s expansion plan for next year includes selling Medicare Advantage plans to 291 new counties nationwide — including another seven counties in Minnesota.
Other insurers are laying out their plans, as well. Medica, for example, is expanding its Medicare Advantage business to 47 Minnesota counties, up from 29 before. Allina Health Aetna, a joint venture of Aetna Inc. and Allina Health System, will expand Minnesota coverage to 20 counties from 12.
