Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont reminds its members of their access to telemedicine benefits and shares new service offerings effective in 2018.
For years, BCBSVT has provided its members access to the largest, most extensive network of providers within Vermont and the U.S. Last year, to further provide members with the most current and convenient access to medical care, BCBSVT partnered with American Well to give members 24/7/365 access to doctors via telemedicine.
Telemedicine provides online video consultation access with a provider via a computer, or an app on a smartphone or tablet. The providers can help with issues like respiratory infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, pharyngitis, rashes, pink eye, cough, flu, stuffy head and allergies. They can also prescribe medication if needed.
Effective January 1, 2018, BCBSVT is excited to announce that members will also be able to take advantage of newly added telemedicine services to include nutritional counseling, breastfeeding support and mental health and substance abuse support.
To use this service, BCBSVT members should visit Amwell.com or download the Amwell app from iTunes® or the Google Play™ store to their phone or tablet. Once a member registers an account, he or she can either select a provider from the list of available providers or simply wait for the next available provider. If a member can’t wait, he or she can also schedule an appointment for a time that is more convenient. One of the biggest benefits of accessing the service and registering ahead of time is that members may access this tool whenever they or their family members feel sick.
“We are very excited to be able to offer our members 24/7 access to providers,” says Dr. Joshua Plavin, vice president and chief medical officer at BCBSVT. “In our busy lives today, scheduling time with a provider can sometimes be a challenge. The convenience and ease of accessing a qualified medical provider using a smartphone or computer provides our members additional access to care, especially in some of our rural areas with more limited provider access. With over half the state’s population living in more rural areas, having a way to connect with round-the-clock care via phone or computer can significantly increase health care access in Vermont.”
Plavin, who is board certified in both pediatrics and internal medicine, also recognizes the advantages of telemedicine from the provider point of view. “For many health situations, especially after hours on nights and weekends, the patient only needs a quick visit, so that the provider can get a clear sense of the patient’s concerns and offer treatment that can help as soon as possible. Providing a new, online way to interact with patients makes good medical sense.”
