Health care giant Humana is laying off approximately 1,300 employees companywide, in an email that was distributed to employees on Monday.
Humana, based in Louisville, Kentucky, services more than 13 million people in the U.S. and employs about 51,600 people nationwide. The 1,300 layoffs represent about 3 percent of its total workforce.

The insurance company said it had been making efforts “to position the company for long-term sustainable success,” including buyouts, which were offered in September. Affected employees will be notified by the end of the week, according to company officials.
According to media reports earlier this year, Humana stated it would be eliminating an unspecified number of positions under a realignment and that those affected included top managers as well as entry-level employees. The disclosures came after Humana’s acquisition by Aetna was called off.
