Monica Berner is the new president of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana.
Berner is the first physician and second woman to be president since Blue Cross and Blue Shield merged in 1986, according to a statement released Monday.
“I am humbled and excited to build on our past successes and celebrate innovation as we continue to navigate the ever-changing healthcare environment,” Berner said.
Berner’s role as president is effective immediately. BCBS is the largest insurer in Montana and is a division of Health Care Service Corporation. The company’s former president, Mike Frank, will continue overseeing Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in Montana, New Mexico and Oklahoma as senior vice president of Tri-State Plans for the Health Care Service Corporation.
Frank said Berner has good relationships with stakeholders in Montana and is prepared to improve health care delivery.
Berner went to medical school at Baylor College. She had a private practice in Oregon and came to Montana to work at the Lewis and Clark County Community Health Center in Helena. She was a physician at the Montana Veterans Hospital at Fort Harrison before joining BCBSMT in 2009 where she most recently worked as chief medical officer and medical director.
“I am humbled and excited to build on our past successes and celebrate innovation as we continue to navigate the ever-changing health care environment,” Berner said.
