Humana Inc. has created a new executive-level position and the the Louisville-based insurance giant dipped into the financial services world to fill it.
Sam Deshpande has been named Humana’s senior vice president and chief risk officer and will oversee the development of the company’s Chief Risk Office, according to a news release.
Deshpande is leaving Capitol One, where he spent 17 years in leadership positions, most recently as business risk officer.
Deshpande will focus on areas of enterprise risk management and compliance, including establishing policy and creating a risk strategy. He will be a member of the Humana management team and will report directly to president and CEO Bruce Broussard.
The creation of this new position reaffirms Humana’s commitment to risk and compliance and will enable faster mitigation of risks and their causes, according to the release.
Deshpande has a master’s degree from the University of Chicago in business administration with a concentration in finance and business economics. He also has a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Virginia Tech, and a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, India.
While at Capitol One, Deshpande also served as head of enterprise services for the Financial Services Division and led marketing and analysis for the home loans, auto finance and credit cars businesses.
