The movement of Aetna headquarters to another place is making news for quite a long time now. The company headquarters will be moved from Hartford, Connecticut. This is the place where the company was founded more than 160 years ago. However, company CEO Mark Bertolini wants to keep the new place a mystery.
Where is Aetna’s new mystery place
In May 2017, Aetna was in negotiations with several cities. The company officials also mentioned that they will announce the decision of Aetna’s movement early this summer. However, it seems Mark Bertolini hasn’t made up his mind to disclose Aetna’s new mystery place. He only mentions that the company has tried to expand its footprint to communities where young talented people want to live.
The campus of Aetna headquarters occupies a 1.7 million-square-foot area. The company currently holds a staff of 6,000 employees in Connecticut and many of these employees are based in the Hartford area.
Mark Bertolini mentioned on a report,
“We haven’t told anybody where yet, but it will be sort of an investment in attracting different kinds of people into our organization. As we have to move away from being just an insurance company to actually impacting the underlying health of the population, that requires younger people, technologists, innovation.”
Some of the company officials mentioned before that Boston and New York are the leading contenders for the new headquarters. A spokesperson for the city of Boston’s economic development officials declined to comment on the statement by Mark Bertolini. New York economic development officials did not reply to inquiries.
Mark Bertolini mentions in his statement,
“We’ve opened up a technology center in Massachusetts, and we’ll continue to add people there. We do have a presence in Silicon Valley, in Denver, in Salt Lake, in … Austin, Texas. Places where people want to hang out.”
Movement of Aetna’s headquarter from Connecticut will result in the state’s second loss of a major Fortune 500 firm. Last year General Electric moved its headquarters from Fairfield, Connecticut, to Boston.
