Blue Cross, North Carolina’s largest health insurer announced its plan to lay off 165 customer service reps. Many of these employees were hired last year to enroll customers under the Affordable Care Act.

1. During the last year, the Durham insurance company had increased its customer-service staff after being fined $3.6 million by the state for extensive problems during open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act.
2. According to a representative with Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the company will be eliminating jobs in Durham, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem.
3. The layoff plan will take effect in the month of June.
4. Blue Cross is cutting staff to support their current customers after the conclusion of the enrollment period. However, the terminated employees are eligible for severance pay.
5. Blue Cross spokeswoman Ryan Vulcan said that to provide great customer experience, the company nearly tripled the number of people taking calls. For the open enrollment period in the year 2017, they grew to a force of 1,600 customer service professionals, which included employees, contractors and vendor support.
Vulcan said- “We deeply regret having to eliminate any positions, but our call volume does not justify our current staffing levels.”
