Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma’s IT department will be impacted by a round of layoffs later this month, a spokeswoman for the health insurance provider confirmed to the Tulsa World on Friday.
“As we shared with employees in September 2016, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma’s parent company, Health Care Service Corporation, is making changes to the Infrastructure team in the Information Technology Group,” spokeswoman Lauren Cusick said in a statement.
The insurer did not provide the number of employees affected but said that it is small relative to the overall workforce.
“To meet our members’ needs and expectations in today’s rapidly changing health care marketplace, we are adapting how we work while keeping rising medical costs in mind,” the statement read.
“We do not make decisions about our workforce lightly, and we are committed to ensuring employees are supported throughout their transitions.”
In November, the Dallas Business Journal reported that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas employees will also be affected by upcoming layoffs but did not provide a number. The article says that Health Care Service Corp. the parent company for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Montana and New Mexico is said to be laying off a total of more than 500 IT people nationwide.
