Baton Rouge – Secretary Bobby Jindal? According to the Wall Street Journal, that’s a possibility.
The newspaper is reporting that the former Louisiana governor and Republican presidential hopeful is among the name being discussed by President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team as a possible candidate to become Health and Human Services secretary. Other names on that list include another former GOP hopeful, Dr. Ben Carson.
Jindal is the former head of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. Governor Mike Foster appointed Jindal, who was 24 at the time, to lead that department in 1996. Jindal overhauled the department’s finances, taking it from bankruptcy to a multi-million dollar surplus by the time he stepped down in 1999.
In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed Jindal as an assistant secretary for Health and Human Services. Jindal held that post until 2003.
As governor, Jindal refused to accept federal funds to expand Medicaid in the wake of the Affordable Care Act, costing Louisiana $1.65 billion dollars in healthcare assistance for poor residents.
