Three institutions on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus are partnering with a national startup supporter to launch an innovation center for cutting-edge health-care companies the first tangible idea to emerge from the recently organized Center for Innovation at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
StartUp Health Colorado will combine the medical expertise of Children’s Colorado, UCHealth and CU Innovations, the technology commercialization office on the Aurora campus.
And it will be done in partnership with StartUp Health, a five-year-old company backed by major players in the health-care field that invests in entrepreneurs and is launching its second regional network affiliate, following the launch of StartUp Health Finland last year.
The idea of StartUp Health Colorado, which will co-locate in the CU Innovations office, is to take envelope-pushing ideas from doctors, entrepreneurs and others and investigate whether there is a way to commercialize them. Over its first three years of operations, the office plans to build, validate and commercialize at least 30 innovative health startups that align with the needs of each institution and their patient populations.
“This will reinforce our commitment to being part of building one of the most important health innovation hubs in the country,” Gil Peri, senior vice president and chief strategy officer at Children’s Colorado. “Our vision is to accelerate the pace of innovation by working collaboratively and to lead the way in supporting a generation of entrepreneurs and health practitioners to create meaningful solutions that benefit pediatric patients and their families.”
