Highmark Inc. unveiled a new mobile clinic, a doctor’s office on wheels targeted at its Medicare Advantage, Medicaid and Affordable Care Act members who struggle to visit a doctor on their own.
Highmark budgeted about $850,000 for its “Health Care on the Go” mobile clinic, which includes the cost of outfitting it and keeping it running this year, said Barbara Gray, R.N., senior vice president of clinical services at Highmark. “We feel that expense is more than justified by the benefit to our members of keeping them current with recommended health screenings and medical tests,” said Gray.
The clinic houses two exam rooms, a wheelchair-accessible bathroom and waiting room. Patients will be able to schedule annual wellness visits, immunizations and other medical tests at the mobile clinic.
For now, there are no plans to build a fleet, said Gray. Appointments at the clinic are slated to begin in June.
