Cambia Health Solutions has closed another in-house startup, one that sought to help doctors diagnose mysterious symptoms.
Enigma, originally named Muse, used a computer-aided intervention to take aim at the problem of symptoms that defy easy diagnosis. It was started in the summer of 2014 by Zhenya Abbruzzese, a Cambia manager.
It’s the second startup Cambia has shuttered in recent months. Earlier this year, the Portland company shuttered Wellero, which offered a mobile application that allows a patient to pay exactly what they owe for medical care, based on their individual benefits and how much of their deductible they’ve already spent down.
“Like so many startups, these companies brought innovative solutions to market but failed to find their niche,” said Rob Coppedge, president of Cambia’s Direct Health Solutions.
Nine employees lost their jobs and nine others were transitioned into other roles within Cambia.
Cambia, the parent company to Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon, both launches its own companies and makes outside investments in health care startups that are geared to helping consumers navigate the system and making care more efficient.
The other wholly owned subsidiaries under Cambia’s Direct Health Solutions that are still active are HealthSparq, Spendwell, hubbub and LifeMap.
“Cambia launches and funds early stage companies because of their potential to transform the health care experience for the consumer,” Coppedge said.
“We continue to actively pursue this strategy, having invested in over ten companies since we launched Wellero. Cambia remains committed to building a family of great, market leading companies benefiting people nationwide.”
