Mayo Clinic has a name for the $1 billion overhaul of its electronic medical records system: Plummer.
The moniker isn’t a misspelling of plumber, but it does have something to do with pipes of sorts. The name honors Dr. Henry Plummer, a well-known Mayo Clinic physician regarded as a champion for innovative ideas— including a pneumatic tube system that shuttles canisters around the clinic, the Rochester Post Bulletin reports.
A spokesperson told the paper that Plummer also came up with the idea for a paper-based system that would consolidate a patient’s medical records in one place.
In 2015, Rochester, Minn.-based
Mayo hired Epic Systems Corp. to migrate all its electronic medical records onto one software platform.
