Millennials are defined as individuals between the ages of 18-35. Due to their upbringing, it is believed they think and behave differently than previous generations. As the healthcare landscape continuously changes and focuses more on consumer demand, a survey was conducted to see how millennials currently impact the industry and what they really think about health care payers, providers and technology as compared to other age groups.
The 5 key findings are:
1. Millennials rely on their parents for insurance.
2. Millennials feel uneducated about health insurance.
3. Millennials visit health-related websites less than any other age group.
4. Millennials most frequently visit health-related websites from a desktop computer.
5. Millennials are least likely to utilize a health insurer’s mobile app.
Millennials rely on their parents for insurance
Millennials are equally insured as are other age groups. However, as we looked into where individuals received their health insurance, results were significantly different with millennials choosing to stay on their parents’ plans longer. Only 20% of millennials surveyed are still in college. There is a significant number of millennials who are not in college, but are still on their parent’s insurance plan. As millennials stay on their parents’ plans longer, challenges are created for both employers and health plans.
Millennials feel uneducated about health insurance
Only about half of millennials feel educated about health insurance options, which differ significantly from the 36-49 age range. Based on respondent comments, millennials feel uneasy about health insurance decisions, citing confusing terminology and continuous changes to plans as explanations. While health plans have made strides to become simpler, there are still opportunities to improve. This can be a critical differentiator as many of these millennials will be purchasing their own insurance or electing benefits through their employer soon.
