Mark Bertolini, the man who soon could reign as the top executive over Humana, said he’s on a mission to fix the health care industry, and Louisville stands to benefit from the transformation ahead.
The chief executive of Aetna, the insurer awaiting approval to close its $37 billion acquisition of Humana, said during the keynote address at Greater Louisville Inc.’s annual meeting Tuesday night at the Louisville Palace that his company increased the salaries and benefits of their lowest-paid employees and that up to 10,000 people in Louisville also should receive raises.
Bertolini praised the innovative work by Humana in connecting and engaging with its members, and because of that “we’ve made a commitment to only one community as part of our worldwide business and that’s Louisville.”
In the audience of nearly 1,100 business people were 100 Aetna and Humana employees gathered this week to work on integrating the two companies. Under the deal, Aetna intends to make Louisville its headquarters for government-related operations in Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and TRICARE for active-duty military personnel and their families.
