According to Citizen Action of Wisconsin, health insurance costs in the state have increased more than 200% in the past 15 years.
A report by the company shows Eau Claire has the most expensive health insurance in Wisconsin for medium and large sized employers, which is 24% more expensive than in Madison.
Experts say in neighboring states like Minnesota, costs are on average 20% lower.
“Most of what has to be done needs to be done at the legislative level. The state needs to accept the federal funds for Badger Care. Eau Claire has had a referendum on the last election and the public overwhelmingly voted for it but it hasn’t yet happened. The best thing we can do here in Eau Claire as individuals is to make sure everyone is covered,” says Kevin Kane, organization director for Citizen Action of Wisconsin.
Kane says Wisconsin has always been a state with high insurance costs and now, is ranked the 4th highest in the country.
