Philadelphia-based Independence Blue Cross CEO Daniel Hilferty has been named board chairman of Chicago-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, effective immediately.
Mr. Hilferty will also continue as CEO of Independence Blue Cross.
Though the job is unpaid, Mr. Hilferty said he likes “being active in the public policy debate.” During his year-long term, he plans to be involved in the discussion around the Affordable Care Act.
“We have to make sure to work closely at the congressional level, with the administration, with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, to have input into the way [care] will be delivered,” said Mr. Hilferty.
He currently serves on the executive committee of the board of directors of America’s Health Insurance Plans. In the past, he chaired the BCBS Association’s public policy committee.
Approximately 105 million people — roughly equal to one third of Americans — are covered by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association’s 36 member companies.
