Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey was ranked as the top health insurance company based on customer satisfaction in the country.
Insure.com conducted a survey of 4,000 U.S. insurance customers for the categories of car, life, health and home insurance.
All top three spots for health insurance were Blue Cross Blue Shield companies, which were ranked based on what percentage of customers were likely to recommend them.
“Health insurance is a changing industry today,” said Penny Gusner, consumer analyst for Insure.com. “But the BCBS companies seem to be navigating this landscape better than some other insurers today — at least as far as their customers are concerned.”
Horizon received 88.8 percent satisfaction, while BCBS of Michigan received 86.5 percent and BCBS of Florida received 84.1 percent.

The Insure.com survey indicating that we are a leading company when it comes to customer service demonstrates that our hard work is paying off and that our customers intend to stay with us for the health insurance needs,” said Mark Barnard, senior vice president of service for Horizon BCBSNJ.
Horizon is New Jersey’s largest health insurer, with 3.8 covered lives out of the almost 9 million residents in the state.
That makes brand recognition easier for the company, but it is an anomaly based on the results, according to Insure.com.
“Relatively speaking, a lot of companies that we think of as household names didn’t do very well in their categories,” Gusner said. “That means picking a company on name recognition alone could be a very bad idea. Smart buyers will look into these things before choosing a policy and not just settle on a company because they saw a clever commercial or recognized the brand.”
