Officials say the President and CEO of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island will retire next year.
Peter Andruszkiewicz said in a statement Tuesday that he plans to retire May 1. A spokesman says the 58-year-old earned more than $1 million last year.
Andruszkiewicz joined the nonprofit organization as it was coming out of the recession. Blue Cross ran a $14 million deficit in 2010. It has at least broken even every year since then and is projected to do so again this year.
Officials say that Andruszkiewicz has focused on making primary care more accessible and better coordinating members’ health care.
Blue Cross officials say the insurer’s board plans to search nationwide to find his replacement.
