The current CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Bill Gracey, is retiring at the end of August, and the largest health insurer in the state has named his successor.
J.D. Hickey, who has served as chief operating officer since 2012, will take the reins.
“J.D. has proven himself to be a highly capable leader throughout his time at BlueCross. He’s consistently driven innovation throughout our organization, while at the same time continuing our commitment to service excellence and affordability. Our board of directors is confident that J.D. is the right person to lead the company at a time when health care continues to change at a rapid pace,” said Betty DeVinney, chairwoman of the BlueCross board, in a news release.
When the joined BlueCross in 2011, Hickey served as CEO of BlueCross Medicaid managed care subsidiary BlueCare Tennessee.
“I’m grateful for the confidence the board has placed in me. Our team — senior leadership and everyone throughout the organization — has successfully navigated unprecedented change in our industry, always with the best interests of our members in mind. And our mission of providing peace of mind through better health will continue to guide our work,” Hickey said.
Hickey was a principal at consulting firm McKinsey & Co. before joining BlueCross.
