The state’s largest insurer, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, proposed raising premiums by an average of more than 36 percent next year.
BCBS says that the rate hike is to reflect the $141 million in losses it took during its first year of offering individual health plans through the federal Affordable Care Act. BCBS says it underestimated the number of medical claims filed by the program’s new enrollees.
Of the 231,000 in Tennessee who signed up for health insurance via the exchange last year, BCBS enrolled almost two-thirds of them.
