BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina on Tuesday named Dr. Shawn Stinson as the organization’s new chief medical officer.
An internist who has been practicing in the state for nearly two decades, Stinson was chief quality and patient safety officer for Palmetto Health in Columbia as well as clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
“Dr. Stinson has an excellent combination of clinical, quality, data analytics and management skills that will continue to guide us as we move into accountable care and continue expansion of value-based reimbursement,” said BlueCross President Jim Deyling. “He will be integral to our part in supporting the medical community’s transformation.”
Stinson, also vice president of clinical innovation, will lead the company’s collaboration with the medical community and oversee units that support the development of clinical care models, new reimbursement strategies, and pharmacy management, officials said.
A fellow in the American College of Physicians, Stinson also serves on the the quality advisory committee of the South Carolina Hospital Association.
He replaces Dr. Laura Long, who retired in December.
