Aetna announced Monday night that Karen S. Rohan will become the company’s president on Jan. 1, taking over one of the roles filled by Chairman and CEO Mark T. Bertolini.
Bertolini has been president since July 2007. He became CEO on Nov. 29, 2010, and chairman on April 8, 2011.
Rohan, 51, came to the company in 2012 as executive vice president and head of Specialty Products. Last year, she took over management of Aetna’s Local and Regional businesses. As president, she will also oversee the Hartford health insurer’s National, Government and Specialty businesses. The company’s core businesses will be under Rohan’s direction.
Specialty Products includes life insurance, disability and dental coverage. National accounts are large employers. Government includes the company’s Medicare, Medicaid, municipal and labor-union lines of business. Local and Regional are employer-based business segments that includes the public exchanges.
She also led the integration of Coventry Health Care and Aetna. Aetna acquired Coventry last year in a $7.3 billion transaction.
“Karen is a proven leader and has been instrumental in implementing our business strategy,” Bertolini said in a statement Monday.
Joseph M. Zubretsky used to oversee National businesses.
Starting Jan. 1, Zubretsky will focus primarily on Healthagen, which is Aetna’s health and technology service provided to clinician groups, hospitals, employers and consumers. Zubretsky was promoted in October 2010 from chief financial officer to senior executive vice president and chief financial officer. He was given the additional responsibility of leading Aetna’s strategic diversification initiatives on top of his CFO duties.
“Healthagen is a critical component of Aetna’s strategy as we work to transform the network model,” Bertolini said in a statement. “Joe’s demonstrated leadership in this rapidly evolving marketplace will be an important element of our enduring success.”
In January 2013, the company announced Shawn M. Guertin would take over as chief financial officer, effective Feb. 25, 2013. Guertin was Aetna’s head of Business Segment Finance. Before joining Aetna, Guertin was Coventry’s chief financial officer.
