Health insurer Humana is weighing a sale of its pharmacy benefits manager (PBM) division for a price tag of $7.1 billion, according to The Street.
A short list of buyers includes St. Louis-based Express Scripts, the nation’s largest PBM with more than $100 billion in annual revenue and more than 100 million members.
After a dismal first quarter, analysts have been pressing Express Scripts on its future growth strategy. And, historically, Express Scripts has grown by acquiring other companies, analyst Vishnu Lekraj, previously told the Business Journal.
But no word on this report from Express Scripts.
“We don’t comment on rumors and speculation,” said Brian Henry, spokesman for Express Scripts.
Humana, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, reported more than $39 billion in revenue in 2012.
