A Chicago couple has donated the largest gift in Wartburg College’s history to fund scholarships for Chicago students to attend the northeast Iowa school.
The college announced Tuesday that Raymond McCaskey and his wife, Judith, donated $11.5 million to the college in Waverly. The donation includes $1.5 million that can be used immediately and $10 million from the couple’s estate.
Raymond McCaskey is the retired chief executive officer of Health Care Service Corp., the parent of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. He is chairman of the Wartburg Board of Regents.
The money will provide scholarships for Chicago-area students, with preference given to those enrolled in the Rowe-Clark Math and Sciences Academy.
Raymond and Judith McCaskey earned undergraduate degrees from Wartburg. Judith McCaskey taught for 40 years in the Chicago area.
