Aetna announced today that it has appointed Thomas D. Jones, III as chief ethics and compliance officer, effective April 29, 2013. In this capacity, Jones will oversee, develop and integrate compliance strategies, policies and procedures across Aetna’s enterprise and lead the compliance department. Jones succeeds Thomas A. Young, who is retiring from Aetna after 27 years of service.
Jones, 48, joins Aetna from The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. where he was senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer. In that role, Jones oversaw the compliance program for the company’s diversified financial services products, retirement plans, group benefits, and personal and commercial property-casualty insurance businesses.
“Compliance and integrity – doing the right things for the right reasons – are part of our core values at Aetna and critical to our business as we enter an increasingly complex regulatory environment,” said William J. Casazza, senior vice president and general counsel for Aetna. “The experience that Tom Jones brings from the financial services and insurance industry will help Aetna continue to foster best-in-class, proactive compliance programs.
“Tom Young took Aetna’s compliance program to new levels during his tenure and we’re grateful for his leadership,” said Casazza.
Prior to The Hartford, Jones was the chief compliance officer for the SEI Funds and its investment advisers. He also held a number of executive positions, including first vice president and compliance director for the Americas at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers. Jones began his career as an associate in the business and finance practice of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Swarthmore College and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
