Air Force Invests $1.3 Million To Help Military Couples Conceive

Share:

July 9, 2020

Struggling to conceive isn’t uncommon. It’s estimated that 12 to 13 out of every 100 couples in the U.S struggle to become pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With this in mind, it’s been announced that the U.S Air Force is investing $1.3 million in Proov Technology with the aim to help military couples to conceive and improve the education offered to Officers about reproductive health. Proov is the at-home testing kit that can help couples identify when they’re ovulating. The investment by the Air Force will help connect couples with doctors who specialize in fertility who may assist them in conceiving naturally.

Proov has announced that it’s accepting a $1.3 million contract from the AFWERX office of the U.S Air Force to help military couples who are trying to start a family. This comes after an initial $50,000 from the Air Force earlier this year. AFWERX is an innovative hub that works with the Air Force Research Laboratory to partner with businesses. The aim of the collaboration with Proov is to support and educate couples in the military as they start their fertility journey and open up conversations and break down the stigma surrounding conception.

“While being in the Air Force for many years and understanding how the healthcare system works, I have seen colleagues and friends struggle to start a family”, said U.S Air Force Major and Proov Champion, Eric Straub in a statement, “with the Proov technology, it is my hope to change the stigma surrounding the lack of fertility resources and provide proactive fertility diagnostics and treatment options for Airmen and their families.”

Infertility can be caused by a multitude of things, from conditions that affect the ovaries to treatment for other diseases such as cancer. Around 6.1 million women between the ages of 15 and 44 have difficulties becoming or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many couples who are struggling to conceive report feeling isolated, anxious, depressed and alone as they don’t share their stories or struggle with loved ones or colleagues. This can have a massive toll on your mental health. The Air Force’s investment in Proov aims to increase education on fertility and conception.

“With this new contract from the U.S Air Force, we are proud to give simple fertility care access to couples who are trying to start a family,” said MFB Fertility’s founder and CEO, Amy Beckley in a statement, “From our research, we saw significant issues in the lack of support and care from military couples trying to conceive. At Proov, we want to continue carrying out our mission to provide women with the knowledge and resources about their reproductive health that can help them conceive without the costly treatments and emotional and physical stress that I personally experienced.”

Proov is a test which couples can take at home which monitors levels of progesterone in women’s urine. This can help track ovulation and provides results within five minutes. In their new partnership, Proov will provide free kits upon request to Air Force couples as well as support and education.

Proov testing kits can help couples plan their fertility journey and may show signs that there are issues. As part of this new agreement military couples will be able to ask for kits from Proov and advice when looking to start a family.
