An Overview of APAC’s Healthtech Landscape – The First Half of 2019

Share:

July 23, 2019

Much has happened in the healthtech landscape in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region in the first half of 2019 – according to Galen Growth Asia’s latest report for that period, APAC healthtech funding hit $2.5B across 140 deals. In this article, MobiHealth News looks at the healthtech landscape in APAC for the first half of 2019 across three broad areas: healthtech accelerators, notable funding rounds of healthtech startups/companies and government-funded healthtech projects/collaborations.

Healthtech accelerators

In May, Sydney-based tech accelerator BlueChilli and Enterprise Singapore partnered to launch a Singapore-based health tech accelerator to spur innovation and build startups that address health challenges and opportunities in Southeast Asia.

Earlier this month, ANDHealth partnered with a consortium of leading medical research institutes and universities in Western Australia led by the Telethon Kids Institute, as part of the State’s first Digital Health Accelerator Program. ANDHealth will deliver its BRIGHT IDEATE and BRIGHT INNOVATE programs as part of the Digital Health Accelerator Program, which is due to commence later this year.

Notable funding rounds

In February, Chinese startup Burning Rock Biotech which focuses on NGS (Next-Generation Sequencing) diagnostics solutions for precision medicine in oncology, closed their Series C financing of $123M.

Singapore-based health technology startup CXA Group announced in March that it had raised $25M in its latest round of funding. This was after it raised $25M in Series B funding led by Capital Group and EDBI back in February 2017. Indonesia-based health-tech platform Halodoc raised $65M in a Series B funding led by new investor UOB Venture Management in March.

China’s Tencent Trusted Doctor platform, which connects 440,000 certified doctors with more than 10 million patients online, offering services from online consulting to e-commerce to physical checks, managed to raise $250M in a fundraising round in April. Chinese medical AI startup Synyi raised $36.3M in Series C funding in early July.

Government funded healthtech projects/collaborations

The National Research Foundation (NRF) Singapore, a department under the Prime Minister’s Office, will set up a national Health Technologies Consortium (HealthTEC) to facilitate companies to translate research outcomes into products and services that can improve the health and wellness of individuals, it announced in early July.

Healthtech and medtech companies/start-ups looking to demo their products or solutions on a regional stage will have the opportunity to do so at the Health 2.0 track happening at the upcoming HIMSS AsiaPac 19 conference happening in October at Bangkok, Thailand. The five main themes for the Health 2.0 track are:
Chronic Disease Management
Artificial Intelligence
Patient Engagement
Data Analytics
Personal Health and Wellness
