Walgreens Boots Alliance and FedEx have launched nationwide next-day prescription delivery from most of the drugstore chain’s locations.
The delivery fee is $4.99 and is available from 7,100 of Walgreens’ almost 9,600 stores, with more to be added in the months ahead.
Same-day delivery is available in a handful of markets, including Chicago, and will be expanded next year, according to a statement.

“This expansion of our alliance with FedEx illustrates our commitment to making filling prescriptions as fast and easy as possible,” Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of operations, said in the statement.
The service began in October, with the number of stores steadily increasing to today’s announcement. Amazon announced this summer that it planned to buy PillPack, an online pharmacy that delivers prescriptions presorted by the dose.
Walgreens has thousands of retail stores, which could give it a leg up in speedy distribution of prescription drugs. But Amazon also has a sizable network of stores where consumers can pick up things they order online after its takeover of the grocery chain Whole Foods.
CVS started offering one-to-two day home delivery nationwide for $4.99 in June. It also has same day-delivery in certain areas.
Some benefit and insurance plans do not allow home delivery of prescriptions, according to Walgreens.
