Google just announced that the Photos app would not automatically save and upload the images from the various application like WhatsApp, Instagram, and other messaging tools due to the overwhelming use of the app in the pandemic.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, people use a lot more photos and videos, thereby overloading the app. The company rolled out a community message in which it informed the users about the same. Users can, however, manually select the backups for the services on their phones.
Google Photos Not To Save Apps Images and Videos By Default
Android phone users who have enabled automatic Backup use the Google photos to take a backup of all the images on their phone gallery to the Google Cloud, they can view them from anywhere in the Photos app. Google automatically backups the photos without the need for any action from the users. Thus there is no filtering of the spam pictures and videos shared on messaging apps, and huge files are uploaded unknowingly.

The apps also store the images and videos share in the messages unless you explicitly delete them. However, Google photos also back them up. Now, when Google realized that users are sharing large pictures and videos through various messaging apps, space usage has increased. It has been so massive that Google Photos has substantially occupied a lot of space on Google cloud and consuming a lot of bandwidth at the backend.
Companies looking to cut the strain on networks and internet resources
In the wake of the pandemic to support the continuity of services and optimal use of resources, companies have adopted ways to lessen the burden on the internet. It includes OTT platforms and YouTube reducing the resolution of streaming videos.
Google Stated about the change
“Due to COVID-19, people are sharing more photos and videos. To save internet resources, backup & sync has been turned off for device folders created by messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and Kik. Starting today, you will notice a message in the Photos App about this change. You can change this setting at any time.”
Backup happened without any interference
If you use multiple apps on your phone through several accounts and use the automatic backup and sync options, you might be using a lot of space on your phone’s internal and cloud storage without realizing the clutter. On the other hand, Google Photos backs up all the images on your phone on the cloud in case you have enabled the option.
Several Apps impacted
Various apps like Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Line, Snapchat, Viber, Hello, and WhatsApp were automatically backed up in the Google Photos, however now it would not happen until you manually select the same.
