Microsoft AI Chief Harry Shum is leaving the organization after spending 23 years with the company. As per the news, Shum will be replaced by Kevin Scott, who is the Microsoft technology chief.
Harry Shum, the executive vice president who is in charge of the AI and research group, will bidding adieu to Microsoft after spending 23 years. He is reportedly exiting at the beginning of 2020.
Harry Shum Headed the Research and AI for long
Shum has been the head of most of the integrated approach for research taking place in Microsoft. The research and AI transitions under the CEO, Satya Nadella, have been spearheaded by Shum. Harry Shum has played a pivotal role in the company for several years. Shum’s group has been a significant research institution competing with pioneers like Alphabet and Facebook.

As per a statement from Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft said;
“Harry has had a profound impact on Microsoft. His contributions in the fields of computer science and AI leave a legacy and a strong foundation for future innovation. I want to thank him for his leadership and partnership, and for all he has done for Microsoft.”
Shum Spearheaded Microsoft AI and Research Initiatives
In 2016, Microsoft began to integrate its research inculcated over the years into its products and offerings. It constituted the AI and Research group in which the researchers and product developers were brought together. Shum was designated at the top position in the group to look over the group, the group grew into six, and the team provided various innovations. Microsoft’s virtual assistant Cortina also developed under Shum’s leadership.
Harry Shum Joined Microsoft as Researcher
Shum joined Microsoft long back in 1996 as a researcher in Washington. After that, he also looked into the Bing search engine.
Shum to Continue to Advise the Top Leadership
As per the spokesperson from Microsoft, Shum will continue to be an advisor to CEO Satya Nadella and Co-founder Bill Gates until he quits the organization.
