Tag suggestions will no longer be available when someone uploads a picture of you on their Facebook account. Tag Suggestions has been one of the most concerning factors regarding privacy breach and was a significant point of the privacy lawsuits since 2015.
Facebook is looking to enhance its face recognition capabilities and provide better control to the users on the way their images are used on the social media site.
Face Recognition Feature In, Tag Suggestions Out
The tag suggestions feature was limited to notifying users about someone uploading a picture of them on the social media website and then automatically tagging them. The Face Recognition feature now enables the users to control the way Facebook uses the technology on the photos to recommend tagging. The cognitive capabilities of Facebook AI can help it identify users’ face from the pictures uploaded.
This easy-to-use control will be available, from where the users can switch face recognition on or off and regulate various uses of face recognition. It prevents unwanted use of users’ photos and divulges better user identity on Facebook.

The Face Recognition feature will be turned on for the users who have the setting for Tag Suggestions selected as ‘On’ for their accounts. Facebook will send information to people about the change in feature and how the new configuration works. The Notice will inform people regarding the specifications, limitations, and implications of the new feature. It will also walk-through the users about the button to turn the setting On or Off.
Additionally, Photo Review feature will not be activated for people who have Face Recognition turned off. Manual tagging will still be available to the users. However, Facebook would not suggest tagging the users who have turned off the face recognition.
Facebook has received flak in the past concerning user data privacy and security. Thus, the company is introducing newer features to rebuild the trust in its users. With the announcement of the new feature, it also re-insured the users that the company does not share user facial recognition information with third parties.
Conclusion
Users who have turned “On” the tag suggestions on their Facebook account settings will soon receive a notification about the new feature. The new features add to the capabilities to Facebook facial recognition as it indicates whenever a user’s picture is posted online on Facebook accounts; it has more options and better implementation.
