The head of Amazon.com’s India operations has joined CEO Jeff Bezos’ inner council of advisers, the so-called “S Team.” It’s a sign of how heavily that country weighs on the tech and retail giant’s future.

The Times of India reported Monday that the move was announced in an email Bezos sent last week to several employees, in which he said Amazon India chief Amit Agarwal would play a key role “as we work to figure out what it is to be a true global company.”

An Amazon spokesman confirmed the accuracy of the Indian newspaper’s report.

Amazon is placing a big bet in India, a developing country it says could become its second-biggest market after the U.S.

There it faces plenty of challenges, from congested cities and ramshackle infrastructure to laws that forbid Amazon to sell its own inventory directly to clients.

Nevertheless, it’s a blueprint to expanding outside the well-trod developed areas of North America and Europe. After all, it’s in the emerging markets where the bulk of the global population lies.

The Times of India report quotes Bezos writing that “Amit and our India team are doing remarkable things.” The newspaper also said Agarwal would teleconference into the S team conclaves.
