Vertu’s New Luxury Phone is for the Elitest of Elites

September 28, 2015

Vertu’s New Signature touch has a starting price of $9,000. Yes, $9,000.

For most people, that little detail will be reason enough not to buy this phone. Of course you could always buy the “pure jet red gold” version of the New Signature Touch for $19,000 and then buy the $2,780 alligator credit card case for it, if you want to spend more money, but most of us aren’t used to seeing smartphones sell for five figures. So what goes into a $10,000 phone? Well, a lot actually.

The Design

There is no denying that a lot of effort went into the way the phone looks. Each one is made by hand in England, by a single craftsman. If you’re wondering who made your New Signature Touch, you can pop open a hatch on the back of the phone and see the craftsman’s engraved signature (maybe you can add them on Facebook). Besides the two back doors (one hides a microSD slot, the other a SIM card), the rear of the phone is covered in the finest leather of your choosing. The front of the phone has a “ceramic pillow” where you rest your ear while making phone calls with your CEO friends, and a screen made out of a single piece of 130 carat sapphire crystal. Along with the sapphire, PVD coated Grade 5 Titanium gives the phone some extra strength and heft.

The Specs

The phone runs Android’s 5.1 Lollipop OS (same as the OnePlus 2) and has a Snapdragon 810 64-bit Octo-core processor (also like the OnePlus 2). It has a 1080p high contrast display, with 428ppi (which is more than an iPhone 6+ but less than a Galaxy Note5). It also has a 21 megapixel rear camera and the ability to shoot 4K video (the iPhone 6s can also shoot 4K, but its rear camera is only 12 megapixels). The phone comes with 64GB of internal storage, as well as a microSD slot for additional external storage. That way you can take plenty of 4K videos of you riding in your yacht.

The Lifestyle

When you buy the New Touch Signature, you are paying for much more than a phone, you are also paying for a lifestyle. Every phone comes with 18 months of Vertu’s Concierge service. WIRED’s own Tim Moynihan wrote about the service in depth, but the gist of it is that with each phone comes an app that puts you in contact with a team of assistants who will fulfill every (feasible) request. Need last-minute reservations to a fancy dinner? The Vertu concierges have your back. In addition to Concierge, every phone comes with Vertu Life, which turns you into a VIP for many “cultural events.” With Life you can get into many members only clubs, or high-profile events. With these types of services, you get a lot of social perks that come with the phone, but chances are that the people who would buy it are already used to this type of lifestyle.

Your New Signature Touch also comes protected. Silent Circle services will encrypt your texts and phone calls. And should you ever lose your phone, you can log onto My Vertu to see your phone’s location, change the passcode, or make it ring loudly. Although if you own this phone, you probably shouldn’t let it leave your sight.
